Envoid was the first birth control pill created by the company G.D. Seaerle and approved by the Food and Drug Administration. Men and women were able to enjoy sexual intercourse and worry less about the chance of pregnancy. This also allowed women to focus more on their careers.

The pill became a symbol of sexual revolution in the 60's and 70's. The pill was blamed for the rise in single motherhood, unmarried couples living together, open marriages and wife swapping, women's liberation, and increased visibility of sex in the media. It is now known that these cultural shifts began before the pill's existence. Nonetheless, the development of the pill became turning point in medicine, women's health, reproduction, and contraception.

The use of contraception changed the cultural norm regarding women and sex. Women were given more control of their lives, which is major shift from coverture tradition.
