The Treaty of Tordesillas was made because Spain and Portugal had disputes over which land would belong to each of them. The Pope stepped in to stop an igniting war between two Catholic countries because the Catholic population was lower because of the plague in Europe. Spain got everything left of the Line of Demarcation while Portugal could colonize to the right of the line.
