After Bartolomeu Dias found a route to India, Vasco da Gama sailed down the route and managed to find the extremely expensive spices for Portugal. This achievement was incredibly important to Portugal at the time; when Vasco da Gama returned with the spices, Portugal gained a great deal of wealth from the value.
