"Jack, who couldn't bear to see the once-respected business end in disgrace, took money out of the greenhouse business to pay off his brother's debts. Wehn things continued to slide, he panicked and stole money outright from his brother-in-law, Jim Hutchison, to pay creditors" (9).

Alex (John's brother) ran his parent's thriving business into the ground. Trying to save it, he borrowed money from everyone he could get it from. When this was not enough, Alex forged a cheque from one of his father's friends.
When John heard about this, he couldn't stand to see his brother and family business go down. So, he stole money from his brother-in-law to pay creditors.
When the town heard about this scandal, they couldn't believe it. John's reputation was ruined, and everyone - even his wife's family - thought of him as nothing more than a scheming businessman.
Soon after, John leaves to Canada to run away from his problems.
This is significant because it is the reason why John leaves to Canada. Maybe, if he had never left to Canada, he wouldn't have met Jessie and Polly wouldn't have gotten murdered.
