Participants may have responded as they did because they have worked out the rationale of the study not because that is how they would in a non-experimental situation.

Do people really tell others that they “ don’t much enjoy meeting” them?
- If delivered in a friendly style perhaps sounds like a joke?

Beattie’s (2003) suggested alternative unfriendly message “would you mind leaving” – perhaps less easily dismissed as a joke if delivered in a friendly style.
