During the Bleeding Kansas Crisis, abolitionist Charles Sumner of Massachusetts gave a speech denouncing slavery, the Kansas-Nebraska Act, insults his colleagues who support slavery. In response, Preston Brooks of South Carolina assaulted him with a walking cane, nearly killing him.
