The sixth World Congress of Cardiology is held, during which is created the International Cardiology Federation (ICF). Atrial fibrillation is found to produce a fivefold increase in the risk of stroke. Argentine cardiac surgeon Domingo Liotta and American cardiac surgeon Denton Cooley perform the first clinical implantation of a total artificial heart (TAH).
