After his death on the cross, Jesus was raised to life after three days in the tomb. His death and resurrection marked the defeat of sin and death, and after appearing to his disciples and many others, he returned to heaven in the presence of his followers. Before leaving, the Gospels recount his giving of the "Great Commission", in which he instructs his disciples to bring the good news of the Kingdom of Heaven and the saving death and resurrection of Christ.
