Nicholas Murray Butler (pictured), Elihu Root and Stephen P. Duggan founded Institute of International Education in 1919 following the disbandment of World War I. The team of scholars and politicians worked to encourage interest in international education and even contributed to the institutions of nonimmigrant visas for international students.
