Following the revocation of the 1598 Edict of Nantes in 1685, it was clear the Protestant faith would no longer be peacefully tolerated in France. Peaking in 1687, French Protestants (Huguenots) left the country, with substantial numbers moving to Britain which had a prosperous economy and favourable religious climate at the time.
