The Japanese attacked the U.S. Naval Base called Pearl Harbor in Honolulu Hawaii. Though no aircraft carriers were stationed at the base, many other ships were destroyed along with the many sailors and soldiers who manned or operated along side them (2403 deaths total). This attack was devastating to the U.S. Navy, but they were able to recover in response. This directly caused the U.S. to join the war, and they entered almost instantaneously while having war declared against them by Germany and Italy on December 11th.
