The Sherman Anti-Trust Act outlawed monopolistic business practices. This legislation gave the federal government to regulate business. This sets a precedent of the federal government creating guidelines for businesses to operate under. This power shift took power away from the businesses to conduct themselves in any way they wanted and gave the federal government the power to keep them in check.
