This battle began as an attempted secret plan on part of British General Gages, in which he would essentially send an army out on the early morning of April 19,1775 to capture colonial revolutionary leaders John Hancock and Sam Adams at Lexington. The plan then went on to involve the forceful taking of gunpowder stores at Concord, but american spies leaked the plan too early. Horsemen like the famous Paul Revere spread warning that ‘regulars’, meaning British soldiers were coming. Thus the colonial militias, especially the fast moving minutemen assembled and were ready to meet the advancing 250 or so British soldiers. When they met at Lexington, the first gunshot, the shot heard around the world was fired from an unknown side. At Lexington, the British killed 7 before proceeding to Concord, only to be met by many more colonials, in trees, bushes, and behind fences. 73 British were killed, with hundreds more injured as they were forced to retreat. This marked the start of the war, and increased colonial confidence in their fighting abilities, along with the spirit to fight.
