This is a good event for Riel because it allows him to be in an excellent negotiation position, as well as a strong defense. When he captured the Fort, he already had guns and there was no resistance to get in. This happens because one man tries to tell them to leave, but Riel simply says "I'm sorry Dr. Cowan, but I have 120 men and it looks like you have only 15. We're staying."
