Benjamin Rumford (Count Rumford), a Fellow of the Royal Society, a prolific inventor and a pioneering famous researcher in heat and thermodynamics invented the first range stove; which are essentially individual, temperature-controlled 'holes' above and next to his Rumford Fireplace.
