Joseph Myers, an American inventor, realized that many irons of the day would scorch and ruin clothes with too much heat. Thus, he developed a thermostat to control the temperature of an iron, in order to achieve the right temperature for different types of cloth, and prevent destruction of delicate fabrics. It used strips of metal that bent and changed under different temperatures, and thus, could break or form a circuit that heated the iron. The user could adjust how easily the strips bent, and thus, how much heat was required to bend them and break the circuit that powered the heater. This meant that the user could adjust how hot the iron would get before it turned off and cooled down, and thus, choose something that would prevent scorching of their clothes - a common problem with normal irons.
