The sadiron, like any other invention, had its pros, as well as its cons, and despite its advantages, things like uneven warmth, constant need to reheat, and potential for severe burning plagued its operation. Mary Potts, from America, solved this. She used plaster, a terrible conductor, to fill the inside of a hollow sadiron. This meant the plaster would absorb heat, and let it out slowly and evenly, prolonging the lifetime of the heat, and giving a uniform spread that prevented intense scorching or not enough pressing of cloth. An added wooden handle, replacing the original metal one, also reduced the chance of burning the user, something that constantly occurred while using traditional flatirons.
