Key Event: The founding of the American Federation of Labor was a key event because it had dramatically improved upon previous unions and is still protecting worker’s rights in present day America.

Defined: The capitalist, Samuel Gompers, had quickly discovered that workers wanted higher wages and better working conditions, called “Bread and Butter issues. Thus, the American Federation of Labor was created as one of the largest union groupings in the United States.

Described: Samuel Gompers came to the US at the height of the Civil War. He witnessed on December 1886 the major loss the Knights of Labor experienced at Haymarket Square. Thus, he decided he wanted to improve upon smaller unions.

Short Term: Skilled workers were able to receive the higher wages and better working conditions they had desired through the management of the American Federation of Labor.

Long Term: The Federation eventually merges with the Congress of Industrial Organizations in 1955, becoming the most influential labor federation in the United States.
