In the 1872 federal election, Sir John A Macdonald were the losing population, Macdonald asked for campaign donatoins to aid his party. Sir Hugh Allan, a Canadian entrepreneur and railway builder, donated over $350, 000 to Macdonald's campaign. After Macdonald's party won the election, a year later, Allan's company Canada Pacific Company, won the the contract to build the trans continental railway. This "bribe" did not go undiscovered though, in April of 1873, a rival politician announced that he had discovered evidence of Macdonald taking a "bribe" from Allan. In return for the campaign money Macdonald told Allen that his company would get the contract to build the transontinntal railway. A telegram sent by Macdonald to Allan's lawyer that was discovered did not help Macdonald's case. Macdonald resigned as prime minister in November 1873. The opposing Liberal Party leader Alexander Mackenzie won the election after Macdonald's resignation.
