6 июн 1944 г. - D-Day
Описание:
With the German forces on the Eastern front on the retreat after their defeat in Stalingrad, the allies wanted to guarantee a swift end to the war in Europe, and decided that a massive invasion of the mainland would be necessary. The French beaches in Normandy were chosen to be the target of the invasion, and close to 25,000 troops were dedicated to this operation. Before this, however, allied troops took control of Axis-controlled North Africa in May of 1943 and then moved on to Italy, liberating Rome and parts of Italy just two days before the scheduled landings in Normandy. The invasion on D-Day resulted in a victory for the allies, but cost them many thousands of lives because of the intense fighting seen from the heavily entrenched German troops. Two months later, in August of 1944, Paris was liberated from Nazi rule by French and American forces.
