During this time period, secret societies were established both to do the bidding of the regime and to oppose it. These groups recruited elite university and high school students. Military societies threatened their family and friends if they did not comply. When youths were confronted and refused, they disappeared.

Anti-military societies were responsible for publishing underground newspapers with insurrecting sentiments and kept written accounts of escaped victims and thos who dissapeared.
