Cast bronze doors of the Baptistery in Florence, Italy. Ghiberti's workshop worked 27 years on this commission. With this work, Ghiberti condensed the Old Testament into ten panels. Michelangelo dubbed them the "Gates of Paradise". They are one of the defining masterpieces of the Italian Renaissance and were installed in 1452. The panels are important in that they introduce new techniques in sculpture such as: the simultaneous depiction of successive scenes within one panel; employing principles of perspective to give depth to the compositions; the use of sculptural illusion by extending some of the figures almost off the panel, while others are depicted in low relief; and evoking large crowds in a small area.
