The Stonewall Inn was a gay bar that had traditionally been overlooked by the police. Bars such as it were often run by organized crime rings since legitimate businessmen would not support any activites that may have been homosexual. The raid on the Stonewall Inn began a series of riots against anti-gay policies and attitudes.
