The assassination of Franz Ferdinand was no doubt a trigger for the first world war. The Austrian-Hungarian heir was visiting a bordering country next to Serbia when he was a victim of several assassination attempts. Fortunately, most of the attempts failed, except one. Gavrilo Princip, an assassin that failed his first attempt, was waiting in an alley, thinking that he had failed the job when Ferdinand's driver makes a wrong turn into his alley. Princip quickly shoots two bullets one Into Ferdinand's neck and one into Ferdinand's wife's belly. This event drove the Austrians furious, creating demands to the Serbs that were just impossible. When the Serbs refused to meet the demands, Austria declared war on them, and Russia, being an ally of Serbia, begins to mobilize its troops. Germany, an ally of Austria, sees Russia mobilizing its troops and declares war on them. Germany then proceeds to declare war on the French, for being apart of Russia's entente. It is only about a month later when the British enter the war, rallying its Australian soldiers with them. I believe the assassination of Franz Ferdinand was definitely a significant event for Australia's involvement in the war because without this event the war wouldn't have happened.
