The Berlin Wall was built as a result of the Cold War. The communist, East Berlin built the wall to suppress citizens from migrating into the free West Berlin. The wall represented division and being held under communist rule. After decades, the wall was finally torn down because of American, Polish, and Hungarian influences towards freedom. Soon, the East Berlin Communist Party opened it's borders for the citizens to cross.
