Lyne Taliaferro Barret found oil at Oil Springs at a depth of 106 feet in 1866. Before this Indians and Spanish and Anglo settlers had used the oil that came from it as a salve and for the grease for settler´s wagon wheels. Barret got the land in Oil Springs around 1859, but he was interrupted by the Civil War. He was eventually forced to give it up due to lack of funding despite it´s production rate of about 10 barrels per day.
