John was forced to move to Prince Albert because of the falling wages, high living costs, and acute housing shortages. He planned to start a tomato-growing business. But on one summer day he watched his crops die in a huge hailstorm. John begins to distance himself from Polly, he writes to her less. "He felt disconnected from the old country and everyone in it."
With the collapse of the railway construction, rising prices, and the three-year drought many people were left unemployed, including John. He finds that his only solution is enlisting for the war in Europe.
This event is significant because he gradually becomes distant from Polly and Kilncadzow. He expiriences more of Canada as he moves to Prince Albert. He expiriences drought, failure, and unemployment.
