The start of the 2nd Sino-Japanese war is sometimes thought of as the true start to WWII. The invasion came as a result of growing tensions between Japan and China, due to the previous Manchurian invasion and the Great Depression allowing a nationalistic fascism to rise in Japan, causing further imperialistic ambitions.
