Following numerous outrages and atrocities (sinking of the Lusitania, Zimmerman telegram, etc), the US decided to formally declare war on Germany and Austria-Hungary. While American divisions would still take sometime to arrive in the European theater, their arrival was still a welcome sight to the war weary allied troops, and with America's help, victory was achieved withing a couple years.
