1857 CE - 1858 CE The Sepoy Rebellion was a major Indian uprising in British-controlled India by the sepoys (Indian soldiers working for the British) of India against the British East India Company. It was started due to pig grease being used in the cartridges of firearms used by the sepoys who would have to bite the ends of them and thus went against their no-pig diet that came with their religion. It was unsuccessful but did result in the dismemberment of the East India Company and direct-control of India by the British Crown. (5.3)
