The Emancipation (or freedom) of the Russian serfs occurred in 1861, in the Emancipation reform of 1861. The Tsar basically just freed the serfs that had been working the land and compensated for the losses that the landowners succumbed to. Due to economic and social conditions, they still were in the lower class and often ended up working the same land, as it was the only work available. Few of these newly created peasants prospered.
