Jackson most popular by far but still failed to reach majority since 4 candidates; House would pick the top 3 most popular candidates and vote on one.
Jackson, Adams, and William Crawford top 3: Crawford had a stroke so he was out
Clay, in 4th place, wanted Adams to win, and as Speaker of the House helped convince the House to vote for Adams, and when Adams won he appointed Clay as Secretary of state
Jacksonians outrage, and protest ensured; showed change was coming
