This was a strike by the United Mine Workers of America in eastern Pennsylvania. Miners wanted higher wagers, shorter work days and recognition for their union. The strike threatened to shut down the winter fuel supply of many American cities. The end results were, a nine hour work day and wage increased by 10%.
