Killed the slave trade in Washington, DC, created harsher interpretation of the Fugitive Slave Laws, allowed the Utah and New Mexico territories to vote either for being a free or slave state and added California as a free state. This created competition as the north and south both wanted more representation in congress, furthering tensions.
