The Ottomans take control of East Turkey where most of the Armenians live. The Ottomans are mostly a Muslim empire and treat the Armenians poorly because they are Christians. The Ottomans raise taxes and discriminate against the Armenians. Also, they give them less social and political freedoms. This is the start of what leads to the Genocide.
