*huge organizational structures dominated American culture which served to oppress and alienate
the individual
*believed students had the power to restore “participatory democracy”

Free Speech Movement(1964) Univ. California at Berkeley – Mario Savio
University’s chancellor prohibited “sidewalk solicitations for political causes” which
prompted 2,000 students to sit-in and occupy university buildings
