The split of the Korean peninsula and the declaration of war following the split were both directly caused by the spread of communism throughout the USSR's borders. This war eventually showed the world that the Communist Influence throughout the world was more real than ever, and it showed that it was possible that countries would declare war on themselves if necessary. This war was about the reunification of the Korean peninsula, but it was also about North Kore working closely with other communist nations in the hope that they would be able to retake the peninsula and then also gain power elsewhere, possibly Japan or the nearby islands.
