An Italian explorer arrived in Newfoundland in search of spices, but only found an abundance of cod fish instead. This was the first connection established between the Europeans and the First Nations that previously occupied North America. This eventually promoted the fur trade: Canada giving the Europeans all the raw materials in exchange for refined products that society found popular.
