Truman ordered anatomic bomb be dropped on the Japanese city of Hiroshima, while at Potsdam (having received word of the successful Manhattan project). This was done after agreement from the British (as needed under the Quebec agreement) and gave permission for 4 bombs to be dropped over a series of days - three days later after another was dropped on Nagasaki- Japan surrendered.
Given that Japan would have probably surrendered later anyway, it is thought that the main motivtion was to finish the war in Asia before the USSR could intervene and so to show America's military might.
