Greece: Euclid of Alexandria, often called the father of geometry, wrote his multivolume work
Elements. Elements is one of the most influential works in the history of mathematic,
serving as the main textbook for teaching geometry from the time of its publication until the early 20th century. Euclid deduced the theorems of what is now called Euclidean geometry from a small set of axioms. (An axiom is a statement that is accepted to be true without proof, a “self-evident truth” to serve as a starting point for further reasoning. The fewer
axioms needed for the basis of one’s theorems, the better.)
Proves the infinitude of prime numbers and presents Euclidean algorithm – one of
the oldest algorithms in common use.
Proves the fundamental theorem of arithmetic – unique prime factorization.
Also wrote works on proportion, spherical geometry, number theory and conic
sections.
