Moroni started abridging the 24 Jaredites plates that had been found by the people of Limhi. The abridgment is known as the Book of Ether. We do not know exactly when he started the abridgement, or how long it took. However, as it is placed after the Book of Mormon in the record, it is likely that Moroni started this abridgement after he had finished the record of his father, which was finished in the year 401.
Mormon had given Moroni instructions regarding the records. When Moroni finished his father’s record he says that he didn’t write more because he did not have the room on the plates, and did not have the means to make more plates. Thus it is clear that Moroni already intended to add the abridgment of the Jaredites, and was worried that if he wrote too much in his father’s record he would not be able to fit all the record of the Jaredites.
