When Lincoln was elected, many of the Southern states said that they didn't want to be a part of the United States. The South felt like they had every right to do so. Beginning with South Carolina, the 11 states said that they would leave the United States of America and form a new country called the Confederate States of America.Abraham Lincoln said that they did not have the right to leave the United States and he sent troops to stop the South from leaving. This caused the start of the Civil War.
