The Lamanites came against the Nephites in the Land of Shem. Mormon encouraged the people with a speech urging them to defend their wives and children, their houses and their homes. He spoke with great energy, and managed to inspire his men to firmness in facing the Lamanites.
The Lamanites attacked with an army of 50,000 men, but were repulsed by Mormon’s 30,000. When they began to flee, the Nephites pursued them. They met in battle a second time and the Nephites again defeated the Lamanites.
However, the Nephites did not fight in the strength of the Lord. The Spirit of God was not with them and they had to rely on their own strength, and were thus weak like the Lamanites. I note that in his speech Mormon did not urge them with thoughts of God and religion, because they were past all that.
