By this time the Nephites had fallen so far that God had withdrawn his spirit from them. Their mourning was the sorrow of the damned, but they no longer had any hope in Christ. In the preceding years thousands had been swept away in war and violence. Rather than bury the dead they were simply heaped up in piles and left to decay.
