We are not told exactly when this occurred, and it likely occurred over a period of time.

What we do know is that during the time that Amos I kept the record there was a revolt in the church. At this time it was a small number of people, but they separated themselves from the rest of the people and took on the name of Lamanites.

We should understand that this group was not literally Lamanites by descent. By this time the people were so intermingled that there were few if any who could claim to be a pure descendant of any of the sons of Lehi.
So, this new group took on them the name of Lamanites more as a symbolic title as they began to rebel against the gospel. They were, in effect, saying that they were renewing the old divisions. As the Nephites had, historically, been the members of the church, and the Lamanites were opposed to it, this new group now took on the name to to show their opposition.
