Rutherford overturned Thomson's model in 1911 with his gold foil experiment. The experiment showed that the atom has a tiny and heavy nucleus. Rutherford's Gold Foil experiment used alpha particles emitted by a radioactive element to shoot at a thin peice of gold foil to show the unseen world of atomic structure.
