Over the past several years the Gadianton Robbers had continued to increase in number and strength. They continued their raids and plundering, and over the course of 12 years had caused such carnage that the Nephites and the Lamanites were compelled to go out in open war against them.

In truth, the slaughter had been so great that the Nephites had been brought to the edge of destruction in this year.

At this time the leader of the Gadianton Robbers was a man called Giddianhi. When he became the leader is not stated, though he may have been the leader from the beginning.
