Sherman saw his first battle at the Battle of Bull Run and had no real army leading experience but impressed Lincoln and was promoted to Brigadier General. Sherman would consistently lead his troops and outflank the Confederate troops and win many battles. Sherman is also famously known for his capturing of Atlanta and leaving a trail of fire down to the sea.
