Sherman really didn't make a name for himself until late in the war. As the commander of the Union forces in the lower south, he is famous for his victory in the Battle of Atlanta and his famous "March to the Sea". Him and his forces marched from Atlanta to Savannah and burned everything in their path, laying waste to Confederate cities in Georgia.
