King Henry VIII of England officially split the Church of England from the Roman Catholic Church and declared himself as its leader. The schism arose from Henry's demand that Pope Clement VII refused to annul the King's marriage with Catherine of Aragon. Henry was upset that Catherine had born him a daughter instead of the son he wanted, but the Catholic Church did not permit the dissolution of a marriage. The typical course of action was an annulment, or a nullification of the marriage (distinct from divorce because annulment states that the marriage was never valid in the first place). After several failed negotiations with the Pope, the Church of England began forfeiting its control within England, including the 1533 Statute in Restraint of Appeals that gave the Archbishop of Canterbury authority over matrimony, allowing Archbishop Thomas Cranmer to annul Henry's marriage.

In 1533, Henry was excommunicated from the Church by the Pope, spurning the King to declare the Church of England separate from the Roman Catholic Church the next year. Two years later, the King of England was declared to be the head of the Church of England. This granted Henry VIII power over his future annulments, but also money previously controled by the Pope.
